Are You Motivated by Satan or Led by the Holy Spirit?

Introduction

There is a dangerous deception rising in the Church. Many people claim the name of Jesus while being secretly driven by another spirit. They may speak Christian language. They may attend church. They may post Scriptures. They may shout during worship. Yet underneath the religious appearance, their motivation may not be the Holy Spirit.

Some are motivated by pride. Some are motivated by greed. Some are motivated by rebellion. Some are motivated by attention. Some are motivated by fear. Some are motivated by the desire to be seen, followed, admired, or spiritually recognized.

This is where we must slow down and examine the heart.

Satan does not always begin by pulling people into obvious darkness. Sometimes he motivates them through corrupted desires while they still look spiritual on the outside.

Signs and Wonders Are Not the Same as Knowing Jesus

Jesus gave a sober warning in Matthew 7:22–23:

“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.”

That passage should make every believer pause.

These people had religious activity. They had prophecy. They had deliverance. They had wonderful works. Yet Jesus said, “I never knew you.”

That means signs alone are not proof of intimacy with God. Ministry activity is not always obedience. Supernatural power is not always spiritual purity.

The Church must stop assuming that every manifestation is proof of God’s approval. Pharaoh’s magicians performed signs in Egypt, but their power did not come from the Lord. False prophets can speak impressive words, but that does not mean God sent them.

Jesus did not say, “I never saw your works.”

He said, “I never knew you.”

The issue was relationship. The issue was obedience. The issue was iniquity hidden beneath religious performance.

Are You Focused on Signs More Than Christ?

Many believers have become fascinated with spectacle. They chase manifestations more than repentance. They chase encounters more than holiness. They chase platforms more than prayer. They chase gifts more than fruit.

Some people would rather hear about dreams, angels, mysteries, portals, secret revelations, and supernatural encounters than hear about dying to the flesh.

But Jesus corrected this mindset in Luke 10:20:

“Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven.”

The disciples were excited because demons obeyed them. Jesus redirected their joy back to salvation.

That correction is needed today.

If signs excite us more than Jesus, something is wrong. If miracles move us more than repentance, something is wrong. If prophecy thrills us more than holiness, something is wrong.

The Holy Spirit does not merely produce manifestations. He produces fruit.

Galatians 5:22–23 says:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”

Many want gifts without fruit. Many want authority without character. Many want influence without humility. Many want power without purity.

But God weighs the heart.

Are You Motivated by Satan?

This question may sound harsh, but it is necessary.

James 3:14–16 says:

“But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.”

James says there is a wisdom that is earthly, sensual, and devilish. In other words, a person can sound wise while being motivated by hell.

A person can know religious language and still be driven by envy. A person can preach and still be driven by competition. A person can serve in church and still be driven by control. A person can prophesy and still be driven by pride.

This is the hidden danger.

Satan motivates through envy. He motivates through comparison. He motivates through offense. He motivates through bitterness. He motivates through wounded ego. He motivates through the love of money. He motivates through the desire to be worshipped.

The question is not only, “What are you doing?”

The deeper question is, “What spirit is motivating you?”

Proverbs 16:2 says:

“All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits.”

God weighs motives. He examines hidden desires. He sees what people are really seeking.

Why do you want influence?
Why do you want ministry?
Why do you want followers?
Why do you want signs?
Why do you want recognition?
Why do you want a platform?

If the answer is not rooted in obedience to Christ, the heart needs correction.

Are You Worshipping the Image of the Beast?

The image of the beast is deeper than many people realize. Revelation speaks of a system of worship, deception, pressure, and loyalty that stands against God.

Revelation 13:15 says:

“And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak…”

Many focus only on the future prophetic details, but we must also recognize the spirit behind the system. The beast system demands worship. It demands conformity. It demands loyalty. It pressures people to bow before what opposes God.

An image reflects the nature of something.

When people conform to the world’s values, they begin to reflect the world’s image. Pride. Vanity. rebellion. greed. sexual immorality. self-worship. hatred of holiness. rejection of truth. performance without repentance.

Romans 12:2 says:

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

The world is constantly trying to shape believers into its image. It uses entertainment, fear, trends, social pressure, politics, money, false religion, and cultural acceptance.

This is not just about what people say they believe. It is about what they bow to.

Some bow to popularity.
Some bow to money.
Some bow to lust.
Some bow to pride.
Some bow to fear.
Some bow to public opinion.
Some bow to the approval of man.

That is where the danger is.

You can say Jesus is Lord with your mouth while your life bows to another kingdom.

Babylon Still Plays Music

Daniel 3 gives a powerful picture of this pressure. Nebuchadnezzar built a golden image and commanded the people to bow when the music played.

Daniel 3:5 says:

“That at what time ye hear the sound of the cornet, flute, harp, sackbut, psaltery, dulcimer, and all kinds of musick, ye fall down and worship the golden image…”

The pressure was not quiet. It was public. It was cultural. It was emotional. It was musical. It was political.

Everyone was expected to bow.

That same spirit still operates today. Culture plays its music, and many people bow without thinking. Media plays its music. Celebrities play their music. Social platforms play their music. False religion plays its music. The spirit of the age plays its music.

The question is: will you bow?

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused. They chose faithfulness over survival. They chose obedience over acceptance. They chose God over the system.

The modern believer must do the same.

The Spirit of Antichrist Wants Worship

Satan has always wanted worship. His rebellion was rooted in pride, exaltation, and self-glory.

Isaiah 14:13–14 says:

“For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God…
I will be like the most High.”

That same spirit still works through pride today.

The spirit of antichrist does not simply oppose Jesus. It also tries to replace Jesus. It replaces surrender with self-expression. It replaces holiness with tolerance. It replaces truth with feelings. It replaces repentance with affirmation. It replaces worship of God with worship of self.

This is why modern culture says things like:

“Follow your heart.”
“Live your truth.”
“Do whatever feels right.”
“Nobody can judge you.”
“You define yourself.”

But Scripture says something different.

Jeremiah 17:9 says:

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

The Gospel is not self-worship. The Gospel is self-denial.

Luke 9:23 says:

“If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.”

That is the dividing line.

Lying Signs and Wonders

The Bible warns that deception in the last days will involve supernatural signs.

Second Thessalonians 2:9–10 says:

“Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish…”

This means not every supernatural display comes from God.

A sign can be real and still be deceptive. A wonder can be impressive and still lead people away from holiness. A prophecy can sound spiritual and still produce bondage. A manifestation can stir emotion and still not lead to repentance.

That is why discernment matters.

Deuteronomy 13:1–3 warns that even if a sign comes to pass, if it leads people away from the Lord, it must be rejected.

God’s people must test the fruit, the doctrine, the motive, and the direction of every spiritual claim.

Does it exalt Jesus?
Does it agree with Scripture?
Does it produce holiness?
Does it lead to repentance?
Does it humble the flesh?
Does it glorify God?

If not, do not bow to it.

God Wants Obedience More Than Spectacle

The Church must return to obedience.

First Samuel 15:22 says:

“Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”

Saul had religious activity, but he lacked obedience. He tried to justify himself. He wanted to preserve his image. He feared the people. He wanted honor after disobedience.

That same spirit is still present when people care more about appearance than repentance.

God is not impressed by noise if the heart is rebellious. He is not impressed by gifts if the character is corrupt. He is not impressed by sacrifice if obedience is missing.

The Lord wants a surrendered people.

Examine Yourself

Second Corinthians 13:5 says:

“Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves…”

This is not a message for pointing fingers first. This is a message for self-examination.

Ask yourself:

Am I motivated by the Holy Spirit or by pride?
Am I seeking Jesus or spiritual attention?
Am I obeying Scripture or following culture?
Am I chasing signs while neglecting holiness?
Am I bowing to the fear of man?
Am I reflecting Christ or the world system?
Am I more excited by manifestations than repentance?
Am I willing to deny myself and follow Jesus?

These questions matter because deception often feels normal to the deceived person.

The enemy does not always announce himself. He hides behind excuses. He hides behind offense. He hides behind spiritual language. He hides behind ambition. He hides behind “God told me” when God never spoke.

That is why we must stay humble before the Word.

Conclusion: Return to Christ

In these last days, many will bow because they never learned surrender. Many will chase signs because they never learned intimacy. Many will follow the beast system because they loved acceptance more than truth.

But the true Church must remain holy, discerning, humble, and anchored in Scripture.

The real question is not whether you attend church.

The real question is: who has your heart?

Is your life moved by the Holy Spirit?
Or is it being pulled by pride, fear, ego, lust, greed, offense, culture, and self-glory?

Repent where compromise has entered. Return to the fear of the Lord. Stop chasing manifestations while neglecting obedience. Seek Christ Himself.

The greatest miracle is not that demons tremble.

The greatest miracle is when a sinful heart fully surrenders to Jesus Christ.

Closing Prayer

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, search my heart and expose every false motive in me. Remove pride, envy, rebellion, selfish ambition, fear of man, and every desire that does not come from Your Spirit.

Forgive me for chasing signs more than seeking You. Forgive me for valuing attention more than obedience. Forgive me for bowing to culture, fear, pressure, or pride.

Lord Jesus, bring me back to holiness. Bring me back to truth. Bring me back to the fear of the Lord. Teach me to love Your Word more than manifestations. Teach me to obey You when the world pressures me to bow.

Fill me with the Holy Spirit. Produce Your fruit in me. Make me faithful, humble, discerning, and surrendered.
